Cranberry, Antioxidants, Morbitity, and Mortality.
We get most of our antioxidants in the form of macronutrients. Wang, Yolitz, Albericothese, et al., (2014), found that longevity is supported by antioxidants in cranberries and is influenced by ratios of proteins, sugars, and fats that differ between male and female Drosophila flies. Their study showed that cranberry slightly extended the life of males fed a low sugar-high protein diet. Cranberry extended the life of female flies fed a standard diet and more prominently the high sugar–low protein diet. The flies with extended lifespan showed increases in reproduction and higher expression of oxidative stress, and heat-shock-response genes. Cranberry slightly extended life span of flies fed with a high-fat diet. Their study shows the importance of considering diet composition in designing interventions for promoting healthy aging (Wang, et al., 2014).
